Shah Mir ascended the throne of kashmir under the name of sultan shamas-din in 1339. He got khutba read and the coins struck in his name.Not much is known about his ancestory.Some historians are of the view that he descenbed from the pandus while others link him to the rulers of swat.on the basis of the accountas of jonaraja and nizam-ud-din ahmad,Dr. R.k. Parmu holds that shamas-ud-din shah mir originally belonged to iran.Mohib-ul-hassan is of the view that his family was of turkish origin.srikanth kaul suggests that he belonged to the khasa tribe living in the valley panjgabbar.
shah mir seems to have been a strong and able ruler and conducted the affairs of the state in a statesman like manner.he succeeded in restoring peace and reviving prosperity of the kingdom which had been earlier torn by the ravages of Dulucha and Achala. According to jonarja,he assuaged the troubles of kashmir and changed its condition."
The later hindu kings had imposed many taxes on the people.they were left with nothing beyound a bare subsistence.shah mir abolished the arbitrary taxes and the cruel methods of extorting them.he fixed the state share of land revenue at one sixth of the gross produce.Farishta says,hetook off the heavy imposts under the annual exaction of dil joo,the chief of kashghar and fixed the assessment of land at seventeen percent on the gross produce."
