History of Kota Rani

The death of udyanadeva in 1338,placed kota Rani in a great dilmma.Her elder son by Rinchana was under the influence of shah mir and the queen rightly feared that if he was placed on the throne,shah mir would exercise royal authority through him.her ypunger son jatta by udyanadeva ,was an infant,she decided to discard both of them.she kept the death of the king a secret for four days hoping to gain time to entrench herself.she shifted her headquaters from srinagar to the strong fort of indra kot (now sumbal),where she proclaimed herself as the next ruler andassumed the sovereigh authority.in this she had the full support of the lavanaya barons.shah mir and other ministers obeyed her and bowed to her as to the crescent of the moon.but the queen was affraid of the upstart shah mir and wanted to humble him futher.she,therefore,ignored the claim of shah mir and place her chief confidence on bhatta bhikshana. this enraged shah mir and he treacherously got bhiksana murdered.

She was very intelligent and a great thinker. She saved the city of Srinagar from frequent floods by getting a canal constructed, named after her & called "Kute Kol". This canal gets water from river Jhelum at the entry point of city and again merges with river Jhelum beyond the city limits.
